What is the median
If we say in simple language, the median is the number that falls exactly in between the given numbers. This is the number that separates the larger part of this group from the smaller part of the group. It can be called the medium part of a given population.
To remove the median we have to arrange the numbers in different ways. For example, if we have to find the median of some numbers, we will either have to write it in increasing order or we will have to write it in decreasing order. When we arrange these numbers in such a way, then the number between them will be the median of these numbers.
Formula of median
The median you saw above is the middle number. Hence its formula is as follows:
Before applying the formula, we have to know how many numbers are there. If the number of observations is an even number, we will apply the following formula:
In the above result ,n is the number of observations.
The formula given above is for the situation when the number of observations is even but if the number of observations is odd, then we apply different formulas.
As you have seen, we have read about two sutras, the first sutra we will use when the number of observations is even and the second sutra will be used when the number of observations is odd.
As we know about the process, we first have to write the whole set of numbers in increasing order or in decreasing order. After doing this we have to count the number of observations.
After this we have to write this number in the formula. When we put this number in the formula, we get another number which is the median of that group.
What is the mean?
The arithmetic mean is the average of the given numbers. It is that number out of a group of numbers that represents all those numbers.
We assume that we have given a fixed group of numbers and we have to find the mean of this group of numbers, then all we have to do is add these numbers and divide the number by the sum of all these numbers. . This will tell us the mean of this set of numbers. Hence, from this given process we find the mean of the group of numbers.
How do we calculate the mean?
Let us consider with an example:
There are two brothers in a family. Those two brothers have different heights. Height of younger brother is 128 cm while height of his elder brother is 150 cm. Now his parents want to know the average height of those two brothers. To do this, they will have to calculate the mean height of the two brothers, which will give them the average height.
= (228 + 150) / 2
= 478/2
= 239 cm
Therefore, we combined the heights of both and divided them by 2 and by doing so the mean of their average height and their height came out.
Hence the average height of both the brothers is 139 cm. As we can see, the average height is between the height of the elder and younger brother, that is, the height of the younger brother is greater than the height of the younger brother and smaller than the height of the elder brother. That is, it comes only between these two.
Formula of mean
As you saw above, we can find the mean by adding and dividing all the numbers, but sometimes the numbers are more and the matter gets a bit complicated and complicated. Therefore, to simplify this work, we will read the formula of finding the mean, which will make it easier to find the mean of the numbers.
As you can see in the sutra, we have to sum all the numbers that are giving us and we have also counted how many numbers they are. Now we have to divide the sum of the numbers by their number. By doing this the number that will come to us will be called the mean.
